How does a Direct Tension Indicator (DTI) work? Direct Tension Indicators work by compressing in a very predictable rate in reaction to generation of axial tensile force in a bolt or stud. The compression (‘flattening’) of the protrusions on a DTI has no effect on the torque necessary to tighten fasteners. DTIs are ignorant of the torque needed to tighten bolting assemblies, yet expert on reporting the resulting tension.
Final inspection is simple, quick, and easy. A visual inspection to determine the Direct Tension Indicators (DTIs) are sufficiently flat is all that is needed, And ViewTite® self-indicating DTIs go a step further – providing a visually obvious neon green indication of proper tensioning.
